Who We Are

We are Bücherpiraten (Book Pirates). We inspire children with stories.

Our non-profit organization has its home in a beautiful old house in the medieval old town of Lübeck in Germany, very close to the Baltic Sea. Children and young people meet here every day in groups. They invent words and stories - be it in the "Office of Lost and Found Words", in "Street Poetry" or in a “Poetry Slam”. They find their voice and are heard.

In our city, we provide 1000 poor children every month with books they can keep. We also organize literature festivals for children and young people, and many holiday workshops. In our region we have already worked with over 300 kindergartens.

We Book Pirates have won many prizes for our projects, which we are very proud of. In our stairwell hangs a whole wall full of awards: the BolognaRagazzi Award, the German Citizens' Award, the Neighbourhood Award SH, the Digitalisation Award SH, the Goldene Göre, the German Children's Award, and others.

We are a very small team and finance our educational projects entirely without public funding. Fortunately, we have over 300 volunteers and many private donors. Otherwise none of this would be possible.

If you want to know more about us, you are cordially invited to explore the site www.buecherpiraten.de or to come by the Children's Literature House in person.

We are working on “1001 Languages”
