Around the World in 80 Languages

We are overjoyed that another language has joined our project: You can now read the story “The Greedy Rabbit” in Japanese! This means that the stories on our website are now travelling in 80 languages around the world.

Mio, the volunteer translator, told us what was challenging for her when translating "the Greedy Rabbit": Since there is no word for "staircase", it was difficult to translate it into Japanese. "Staircase" and "stair" both mean "stairs," […]. At first, I wondered whether I should choose "steps" or "stairs", but as a result, I decided on "stair”.

Mio also shared with us words that fascinate her in the Japanese language: “Itadakimasuis” is a word said before a meal. It expresses appreciation for the animals and plants that give us life, and for the people who make them. Also the word “gochisousama” is a word said after a meal. A word that express appreciation for the " feast" of living life, and for the care taken by the person who prepares the meal to provide all the ingredients. 
Although there is an English translation - "Itadakimasu" is: “let's eat!” in English; and “gochisousama” is: “Thank you for the meal” - Mio said that these English translations don’t really feel right. 

We are sure you know the feeling. Some words and phrases only live in certain languages, emphazising that every new language makes our perception of the world and the way we relate to it more diverse.
